135th Tobacco Market Opens

The smell of flue-cured tobacco filled the air downtown as Wilson opened the 135th Tobacco Market. As the “World’s Greatest” tobacco market, Wilson has a long history and association with the crop. The auction opened with dignitaries in place for the beginning bids and later to unveil a new State of NC Official Marker commemorating the founding of the market in 1890 at the site of the Local Tobacco Board of Trade (1926-2004).
