Hundreds of excited baseball fans gathered at the Wilson Airport Friday, November 22nd to hear representatives from the Milwaukee Brewers, the Carolina Mudcats, and the City of Wilson announce the official name the Mudcats will adopt when they move to their new stadium in Wilson in 2026. A flyover featuring vintage aircraft started the event to the delight of the large crowd.
The nickname Warbirds is a reference to military aircraft that continue to fly after their service days are over. More specifically, the name is a tribute to Wilson’s own Vollis Simpson, a World War II pilot who went on to become a sculptor. Simpson was best know for creating the large, wind-powered Whirligig structures on display at Wilson’s Whirligig Park, which will be visible beyond the left field wall in the team’s new downtown ballpark.
“Designed to symbolize historical significance and unmatched speed, the logo celebrates community passions for baseball, aviation, and Americana,” the team said in a statement. After the unveiling of the new logo, those in attendance were treated to food, live music, and the first chance to purchase Warbirds merchandise, ranging from t-shirts, ballcaps, jerseys, and more.
