Opening Reception: ‘Pentimento’
Barton Art Galleries presents Pentimento, a group exhibition featuring artists from The Painting Center in New York City, a nonprofit gallery dedicated to the exhibition of contemporary painting and related media.
Inspired by the artistic concept of pentimento—the visible traces of earlier ideas that emerge beneath the surface of a painting as it ages—the exhibition explores themes of memory, revision, and rediscovery. Drawing on writer Lillian Hellman’s description of pentimento as “a way of seeing and then seeing again,” the participating artists examine how painting can reveal the evolution of thought, perception, and creative process.
Founded in 1993, The Painting Center was established to provide a dedicated space for the exhibition of painting while supporting emerging, mid-career, and established artists. Through exhibitions, educational programs, lectures, and public events, the organization has championed diverse artistic perspectives and contemporary painting for more than three decades.
Pentimento features works by Alix Bailey, Kathleen Beausoleil, Connie Brown, Tracy Burtz, Steven Cabral, Mary Crenshaw, Dale Emmart, Robin Feld, Caroline Harman, Sue Havens, Andrea Kantrowitz, Kellie Lehr, Megan Marlatt, Kristin Osterberg, Lisa Petker Mintz, Julian Pozzi, Gerri Rachins, Donna Scarpa, Christopher Schade, Rachel Volpone, and Scott Wixon.
The exhibition is free and open to the public in the Barton Art Galleries, Case Art Building.
